Chapter 9
“What’s up, man?” Remington said when Spencer peeped around his office door. “Been a minute since you’ve been down here.”
“Yeah. I figured I’d swing by and holla at you for a minute.”
“I’m glad you did because I don’t know what you did to my sister, but whatever it was, I appreciate it.”
“What do you mean?”
“She actually apologized to me yesterday if you can believe that. And, by the way, I like her gift shop idea.”
Spencer sat down. “You do?”
“Yes. I just emailed Giovanni and Jojo about it.”
“That’s good. I’m sure Jess appreciates that.”
“She does,” Remington said. “So, how’d it go with her otherwise?”
Just then, he had a vision of kissing her when he said, “Fine. Everything was okay. You know Jess…she’s not so open to new ideas…doesn’t really want someone telling her what to do, but once we got to talking about different things, her attitude sort of went away.”
“Good. I’m glad you had the power to do that. I figured she’d listen to you before she would listen to me.”
Spencer lifted a brow. “How you figure that?”
“She considers you a family friend, so she’s more apt to take criticism from you than from me. But, thanks to you, we called a truce. We’re starting over. She wants me to be more of a brother instead of a father figure and now I understand why.”
“That’s nice, man.” Spencer stroked his mustache, thinking.
“What’s up with you otherwise?” Remington asked.
“Nothing much.”
“Sure about that? You seem a lil’ off.”
Spencer smiled uncomfortably. “Off?”
“Yeah, man. What’s up? What’s on your mind?”
“Nothing. I was thinking about something. That’s all.”
“Shoot. I got time. You’re already in my office. May as well get it off of your chest.”
“I was uh—” he hesitated. He couldn’t talk about Jessalyn. Whatever he wanted to say whether he was talking in hypotheticals or not, Remington would be smart enough to figure out that he was talking about Jessalyn. So, he said, “It’s nothing.”
“Oh, come on, man.”
“All right. So, Sunday evening, I went out to grab a bite to eat and this couple with two kids caught my attention. They looked happy had two little girls, and there I was sitting alone with no prospects. I’ll be thirty-seven this year, and what do I have to show for myself?”
“You have a lot. You have a successful business, a top-notch home. You got everything.”
“Everything except for what you have. What Giovanni has. Love.”
“Is that what you want?”
“Of course, it’s what I want.”
“But you never talk about women or dating. Why is that? Because of that gold digger you dated for a year?”
“I thought she was the one, Rem. As a man, I want to know that the woman I think is the one is a good choice, and I failed miserably with her.”
“Yeah, but it doesn’t mean that you give up. You’re a good dude, man. You deserve to be happy just like everyone else. I’m kinda glad to hear you talking about wanting those things. I thought you were on Kenton’s bandwagon about not ever wanting to get married and remaining a bachelor for the rest of your life.
